Please contact us if you’d like to enter.  The event will take place on Oct 7-8 before the US National Surf Kayak Championships Oct 9-10

The tentative reschedule date for the Island Waveski/Riot Kayaks Battle for Hatteras is FALL 2009

Once this date is 100% confirmed we’ll post more info

Thank you!

Hello everyone,
It really bums me out to have to say this, but I’ve decided to postpone the Battle for Hatteras event that was scheduled for this weekend.  We will hold the event at a later date, TBA.

I’ve consulted with lots of knowlegable folks on the potential conditions and gotten a variety of responses.  Most signs point to very extreme “victory at sea” conditions for friday, saturday, and perhaps part of sunday, with winds in the 22-31 MPH range.  This event is supposed to be a fun time for everyone to hang out on the beach and enjoy surfing together, and the conditions seem to not be conducive to that.  Lots of people have put much time and effort into this event already, and I’d rather see us restage the event at a later date than to have to drive all the way out to Hatteras to only be greeted with unsurfable conditions.

The storm is being very erratic at the moment, and we have no idea where it is going to hit or how badly, and some of the participants are directly in the storms potential path, so that is a concern.

It is really a case of poor timing, if we were catching the early front end, or the late back end of the storm, we’d be set up for some beautfiul conditions.  And maybe this is just a false alarm and conditions will be beautiful in spite of what the forecasts say….but for the safety and enjoyment of the competitors, judges, and volunteers the best thing is for us to postpone.

That being said we WILL host the event at a later date, with the same fabulous prizes etc.  Please stay in the loop on the plans, more will be posted later.

Thanks to everyone for being patient and supportive in this situation.  I’m really bummed as I know many of you are.

Thank you to Paula, Gordon, Lindsay, Spencer and everyone else who have volunteered their time for the Battle for Hatteras event, as well as the title sponsors, Island Waveski and Riot Kayaks.

Everyone be safe over the next few days.

Some info I need to pass along:

1. We have 7 teams currently, would be GREAT if we could fill the 8th team.  If you know anyone who’d like to compete, I’ll be willing to give their team a discount just so we can fill the slots.

2. If you haven’t registered for individual please do, I’d like to set up the heats for that ahead of time.

3. I need to know EXACTLY who is surfing what position for your team by MON Sept 1.  You need to declare who is your HP, IC, and Ski paddler, these must be three different people.  This person must remain in that division for the entire team event.  I must know ahead of time, because I want to eliminate any desire for anyone to switch their paddlers due to their heats.

4. We will meet on friday early evening to sign waivers and talk about the event.  Location will be confirmed for this meeting by mid week next week.  Probably will be at the lighthouse parking lot.

5. REMEMBER your team must have some sort of flag and flagpole!  Stake out your zone on the beach and let the team spirit flow.

6. As long as the Falcon Motel remains cool with the idea, we’re planning on having an informal get together and cook-out on saturday evening of the event.  We’ll need to figure out a grill to use, if anyone has a portable one and doesnt mind bringing it, please do.

The ESKA will buy some hamburgers and buns, ketchup, mustard and cheese for everyone, but if you want to bring some other stuff for grilling you may want to.  Also, if everyone could bring some sort of side item, chips, potato salad, etc, that would be helpful.
There are some grocery stores in the area, and many of us have fridges in our rooms.  BYOB of course.

If you have questions, please let me know, I’ll have some more updates for you early next week.

Well, registration is open and the team slots are filling up, get yours in soon!

A current list of entered teams is available from the “Current Teams” page on this site.

As for where to stay, we’re officially recommending the Falcon Motel on Hatteras as a great affordable place to stay for the contest.  We used the Falcon during the last National Championships, the folks there are really nice, theres lots of space near the rooms to outfit boats, etc, and the prices can’t be beat ($69 a night for a 2-4 person room).  The rooms are pretty simple, so if you are looking for something more swanky, there are some other hotels and rentals in the area.  But we like the Falcon people, and we’ll probably hold the awards ceremony there at the pool…as we did for nationals.  Heck…they even sent the ESKA a christmas card last year!

There is a fishing tourney that weekend, so rooms are going to fill up fast, call and reserve one ASAP. for details

There is some camping available in the area as well, I know theres a KOA and some other spots.  Make sure you confirm their proximity to the Hatteras Lighthouse, to make sure you’re in the right neck of the woods. has info about camping options.

Hope everyone is getting excited about the contest, I know several teams are still looking for Waveskiers so please spread the word.

It is important that you read this entire post if you wish to enter the Battle for Hatteras.

Registration will begin on Friday, July 25th at 12 noon PST (this is corrected from earlier) on

You will need to have one representative from your team register your entire team for the main event.
Entry fees will be 180 dollars PER team, sorry it can’t be lower, but we’ve got a lot of costs to cover, rest assured that all the entry fees will go back into the event.

Registration is open to anyone who wants to field a team.
In order to register you need to have TWO of YOUR 3 TEAM SLOTS FILLED. You will need to name your 3rd person by August 22nd. (If you already have 3, go ahead and sign all 3 up)
Team positions will need to be finalized by August 22nd as well.

If time permits we will be holding an individual event with Mens High Performance, Womens High Performance, and Waveski classes only. This portion of the event will not be the priority, and if we need extra time, we will be unable to run individual heats……but we’re going to try.

If you wish to enter the individual classes, you will need to enter separately from your team entry.
Entry fee for individual classes will be $5 each. You do not have to compete in the team event in order to compete in the individual event, slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis, and may be limited due to time constraints…..

There are 8 slots for Teams in the main event. IF all 8 teams become filled, and there are MORE folks wanting to enter a team, email me and we’ll put you on a waiting list. This system is going to work best with 8 teams, but there is potential to run it with other numbers, we want to include as many people as possible of course, but there is no guarantee.

The link to the registration is HERE

Thanks for the interest, and we hope to see you in september!

And if you need a team and don’t have one yet, email me, I’m making a list so I can help teams get filled out.
