Hello everyone,
It really bums me out to have to say this, but I’ve decided to postpone the Battle for Hatteras event that was scheduled for this weekend. We will hold the event at a later date, TBA.
I’ve consulted with lots of knowlegable folks on the potential conditions and gotten a variety of responses. Most signs point to very extreme “victory at sea” conditions for friday, saturday, and perhaps part of sunday, with winds in the 22-31 MPH range. This event is supposed to be a fun time for everyone to hang out on the beach and enjoy surfing together, and the conditions seem to not be conducive to that. Lots of people have put much time and effort into this event already, and I’d rather see us restage the event at a later date than to have to drive all the way out to Hatteras to only be greeted with unsurfable conditions.
The storm is being very erratic at the moment, and we have no idea where it is going to hit or how badly, and some of the participants are directly in the storms potential path, so that is a concern.
It is really a case of poor timing, if we were catching the early front end, or the late back end of the storm, we’d be set up for some beautfiul conditions. And maybe this is just a false alarm and conditions will be beautiful in spite of what the forecasts say….but for the safety and enjoyment of the competitors, judges, and volunteers the best thing is for us to postpone.
That being said we WILL host the event at a later date, with the same fabulous prizes etc. Please stay in the loop on the plans, more will be posted later.
Thanks to everyone for being patient and supportive in this situation. I’m really bummed as I know many of you are.
Thank you to Paula, Gordon, Lindsay, Spencer and everyone else who have volunteered their time for the Battle for Hatteras event, as well as the title sponsors, Island Waveski and Riot Kayaks.
Everyone be safe over the next few days.
Joey
